Third Family Meeting for NKK-CAL

The NKK-CAL gathering in Istanbul

The third NKK-CAL (continuous annealing line) "family" meeting, organized by NKK's Plant Engineering Division, was held in Istanbul and Eregli, Turkey from November 18 through 20, 1997.

The family meetings are an opportunity for NKK, users of the NKK-CAL process and equipment suppliers to exchange technological information and promote goodwill. The first gathering of this kind was held at NKK's Fukuyama Works in March 1985 and the second was held in Dusseldorf, Germany in November 1989.

About 60 participants representing 11 steel mills and four CAL equipment suppliers from 11 countries attended the third meeting. Among the participants were Baoshan Iron & Steel (China), Bethlehem Steel (U.S.A.), China Steel (Taiwan), Erdemir (Turkey), Novolipetsk Iron and Steel Works (Russia), Pohang Iron and Steel (South Korea), Sollac - Montataire Plant (France), SSAB Tunnplat AB (Sweden), Thyssen Krupp Stahl (Germany), Voest Alpine Stahl Linz (Austria) and NKK. During the November 18-19 technical sessions, NKK and other users made presentations on their newest metallurgical technologies, facility improvements and operational achievements. A panel discussion followed. On November 20, a plant tour of the latest NKK-CAL installation at Erdemir's cold rolling mill in Eregli was conducted.

NKK-CAL is a continuous annealing process that revolutionized the annealing process of cold rolled steel sheets and strips. China's Baoshan Iron & Steel placed the latest order for NKK-CAL. Construction is underway for the plant's scheduled commissioning in the spring of 2000.
