NKK Constructs Waste Incineration Plant in Thailand
NKK has successfully completed construction of a waste incineration plant on Thailand's southern resort island of Koh Samui in the Gulf of Siam. NKK received an order for the plant from the Thai government's Public Works Department at the end of 1995. The plant incorporates two 70-ton-per-day stoker-type incinerators to treat 140 tons of municipal waste daily and advanced flue gas treatment systems based on NKK technology. The facilities enable highly efficient waste disposal, allowing Samui to end its conventional waste disposal through landfill, which was a cause of generation of methane gas and other air pollutants that lead to global warming. The installation of the new plant is expected to make a major contribution to environmental protection of the local community. The Samui plant is NKK's second overseas waste incineration plant project following one supplied to Taiwan. NKK completed the project within a strictly stipulated construction period despite difficult local conditions involving the transport of materials and machinery to the site by ferries. In designing and installing the plant, NKK fully utilized locally available manpower resources, including those of NKK Techno Manila Inc. and NKK Engineering Thailand Co. In an effort to contribute to reducing green-house gases, NKK is also involved in several feasibility studies for environment-friendly energy utilization projects in Thailand, including industrial waste incineration and waste heat recovery at the Bangpoo industrial complex and waste heat power generation in Ayutthaya City. These research projects are being promoted with funds from Japanese governmental bodies, such as MITI, JETRO and NEDO. |
