NKK has begun marketing a newly developed high-performance chromium-free coated steel sheet that overcomes the weak points of conventional chromium-free coated steel sheets. Called "Geo Frontier Coat," the new product can be a substitute for chromate-treated steel sheets and meet emerging needs of users in electrical appliance sectors promoting "green procurement" of environment-friendly products.
Galvanized steel sheets are generally surface-treated with chromate to enhance corrosion resistance. However, to help reduce the use of substances that are harsh on the environment,alternative methods of surface treatment without use of chromium have been studied. While existing chromium-free coating technology provides favorable corrosion resistance after the treatment, it still has one weakness. When users try to remove the press oil with alkaline degreasers, the film is chemically damaged, thereby deteriorating the corrosion resistance.
The major advantage of NKK's new chromium-free coated steel sheet is that it has the same corrosion resistance level as chromate-treated steel sheets, due to a proprietary organic composite coating that was applied, even after alkaline degreasing.It is a new product with a good balance of added features highly desired in electrical appliances,such as fingerprint resistance, conductivity, and paintability. Both electrogalvanized and hot-dip galvanized steel sheets can be used as substrates.
In addition to Geo Frontier Coat, NKK has also developed a high-performance chromium-free prepainted steel sheet called "Chromium-free Excel Coat." These two products are the centerpiece of NKK's new series of environment-friendly steel sheets, for which the company is stepping up sales efforts focusing on such uses as the chassis and inner parts of home electronics, audio-visual,personal computer, and copier products. Use in the auto and building materials sectors will also be promoted in the future.
