NKK has published "NKK Environmental Report 1999," which outlines the company's environmental policies, ongoing endeavors to tackle environmental issues and future targets.

The report introduces NKK's environmental charter and management systems based on ISO 14001 standards. The report also covers energysaving and environmental protection measures taken at the steelworks, efforts for less-emission, ranges of eco-friendly steel products and manufacturing technologies. Also detailed are NKK's versatile engineering technologies for energy and resource conservation, waste disposal, water treatment, and resource recycling that draws on the synergistic effect of the company's steel and engineering operations.

The NKK environmental report will be published annually and be available on the company's web site.

Based on the corporate philosophy that "it is the company's social duty to protect the environment," NKK has been actively involved in environmental preservation, energy saving and resource recycling activities, while cooperating with national and local government policies in these areas over the years. Today, with environmental issues becoming ever more diverse, complex and critical, NKK is striving to ensure that its environmental protection and business activities go hand-in-hand. The company is specifically focusing on the following four major issues.

The first issue is the response to global warming problems. NKK is working to save energy in accordance with the Japan Iron and Steel Federation's voluntary action plan, which targets an 11.5% cut in energy consumption by 2010.

The second issue is the promotion of environment-related businesses. NKK is energetically marketing unique technologies it has developed, such as a waste plastics recycling system for feed in blast furnaces, a waste gasifying and direct melting furnace, and a 6.5%-silicon magnetic steel sheet.

The third issue is the participation in and contribution to the creation of a recycling-oriented society. NKK is achieving this goal through steel can recycling, local clean-up programs and other community activities.

The fourth issue is the promotion of voluntary, proactive environmental protection programs. Since enacting the environmental charter in April 1996, NKK has launched company-wide environmental management programs and acquired ISO 14001 certification for both its Keihin and Fukuyama Works. The company intends to continue its endeavors toward global environmental protection.
