Japan's largest wind power plant built by NKK recently began fully operating in Hisai City, Mie Prefecture. The power plant employs four 750kW turbines capable of generating a maximum 3,000kW of electricity. Each wind turbine stands 50m tall, with three blades creating a wheel 50.5m in diameter. Annual output from the four units will reach 8-million kW/hour, equivalent to annual power consumption by about 2,400 local households. In addition to providing electric power to the region, Hisai City looks forward to revitalizing the local economy, while promoting environmental education among children through the generation of clean energy via the wind.

NKK undertook civil engineering, installation of wind turbines, which were introduced from Lagerwey Windturbine B.V. of the Netherlands, and system integration for the ¥800-million Hisai plant. Since obtaining an exclusive sales license from Lagerwey in 1996, NKK has been actively supplying wind power plants in Japan, securing a top-ranked share of the business in the domestic market.

In view of the increasing support for clean energy utilization from NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) and other authorities, NKK plans to propose multipurpose wind power plant development projects combined with agricultural, desalination and other end uses to municipalities and private-sector operators.
