"Snow Kaiser" Unveiled in Shikoku

NKK has supplied its icemaking-type snowmaking system, known as "Snow Kaiser," to "Snow Park Unpenji" in Kagawa Prefecture on Japan's western island of Shikoku. Snow Kaiser is already in use at several skiing sites around Japan, but this is the first order NKK landed from a Shikoku ski resort. The order is from Nippon Cable Co., Ltd., a main contractor for the Unpenji snow park, which is being developed by Shikoku Cable Co., Ltd. The park is due to open on December 15.

The Snow Kaiser system at Snow Park Unpenji features an icemaking machine with a daily production capacity of 100 tons. The machine makes flake ice of 1mm thickness, which is transformed into fine-particle snow and sprayed onto the ski slopes using an automatically controlled spraying machine. The ski ground is located at 920 meters above sea level, allowing a full view of the Seto Inland Sea, and is covered with both natural and artificial snow. Its main slope runs 260m long and 50m wide with a slope of 14 degrees.

The main benefit of Snow Kaiser is that it produces fine-quality snow regardless of outside temperature, humidity and other weather conditions. NKK developed the system based on its extensive ice and snow engineering technology acquired through its long experience building Antarctic icebreakers.
