Stainless-Clad Steel Plate to be Supplied
for UAE Desalination Plant Construction
NKK has received an order for 3,700 tons of stainless-clad
steel plate to be used in construction of the Shuweihat seawater desalination
plant, located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Marubeni-Itochu Steel
Inc. represented NKK in the deal.
The order comes with a short lead-time, requiring delivery
between May and August. NKK will receive support from Kawasaki Steel,
marking acceleration of the new JFE alliance.
The largest of its type, the Shuweihat desalination plant
will boast the highest water production capacity in the world. The seawater-resistant
stainless-clad steel plate to be supplied is also the largest amount
ever used in a desalination plant. NKK will supply the 12-18mm thick
steel plate to UAE plant fabricators, which will be determined at a
later date. The deciding factors in landing the order were NKK's track
record as well as the company's ability to produce and deliver a large
volume of clad steel plate in a short period of time.
NKK's hot-rolled clad steel plate has won acclaim both
at home and abroad for a wide range of applications that include petroleum
refinery, power generation and chemical plants. The plate is manufactured
at the Fukuyama Works' ultra-large reduction, heavy plate mill, enabling
excellent bonding of base carbon steel and cladding material.
NKK and Kawasaki Steel have been collaborating since
last year on several manufacturing processes. For the UAE plant project,
Kawasaki's Mizushima Works will provide the Fukuyama Works with support
on the clad steel finishing process in order to ensure that the delivery
deadline is met. In anticipation of several desalination plant projects
planned in the Middle East, NKK looks forward to working with Kawasaki
Steel to promote stainless-clad steel plate orders from this region.
