NKK to Supply Large-Diameter UO Pipe for
Western Australian Gas Pipeline Project
NKK has begun shipping large-diameter UO welded line
pipe, which will be used in construction of a new offshore gas pipeline
off the North West coast of Australia. NKK received an order to supply
85,000 tons of X65-grade UO pipe for the project through trading house
Mitsubishi Corporation in January this year. The contract requires shipment
to be completed in six months beginning April.
NKK's 42-inch outside-diameter UO line pipe is highly
resistant to corrosion, making it ideal for sour gas applications in
Australia's North West Shelf natural gas development project. Woodside
Energy Ltd., the delegated Operator for the North West Shelf Venture,
will lay a 135km submarine trunkline to transport natural gas extracted
from two offshore gas platforms to an onshore processing plant on the
Burrup Peninsula. The pipeline is slated to be commissioned in early
2004.
The 42-inch diameter sizing of the second trunkline has
been chosen to provide sufficient capacity to supply existing Japanese
and other customers, as well as to cater for substantial growth in gas
supply demand for gas-related industries in Western Australia.
