JFE Holdings, Inc. announced today that as part of a land reuse project in the Keihin District of JFE Steel’s East Japan Works it will partner with Hulic Co., Ltd. to redevelop the north side of the Works’ Minamiwatarida area, focusing on the establishment of a research and development hub.

Under the plan, JFE Steel will remove existing buildings, upgrade roads and perform other work at the site, which is currently occupied by JFE Steel research facilities. Thereafter, Hulic will develop the area in line with the concept set forth in the City of Kawasaki’s Minamiwatarida District Basic Development Plan, which envisions the formation of an industrial hub where a diverse range of companies, research institutes, etc. will develop advanced materials from the fiscal year starting in April 2027.

JFE Holdings, which entered into an agreement with the Kawasaki city government on February 1, 2021, has been collaborating with the city and related organizations to study opportunities for redeveloping selected properties it owns in the city. The commencement of actual redevelopment work on the north side of Minamiwatarida within the current fiscal year will mark the company’s first concrete step toward the eventual repurposing of some 400 hectares of land in Kawasaki.

Going forward, JFE Holdings is committed to working with Kawasaki to repurpose properties in order to contribute to the sustainable development of the region and Japanese society as a whole.
